This study aims to point out the contradictions inherent in the production and consumption processes of capitalism that cause socio-ecological crises and to discuss the orientation of alternative welfare state for socio-ecological transition. Eco-Marxism has developed mainly around the discussions of O’Connor, who focused on value augmentation in the production process, and Agger, who focused on preference manipulation and development in the consumption process. O’Connor’s analysis is significant in that it introduced political-economic analysis and class perspective to the ecological discourse, but it has limitations in that it does not fully capture the transition from a labor society to a consumption society. On the other hand, Agger’s analysis is meaningful in that it explains the relationship between workers’ exploitation and increased consumption and reflects the transition to a consumption-centered society, but it has limitations in that it overlooks the continuity of the production process and work ethic. In this regard, this study comprehensively analyzes the problem of ‘alienation’ in the production and consumption processes and critically discusses the limitations of the traditional welfare state and social policy in overcoming the socio-ecological crisis. Furthermore, it seeks the orientation of a new welfare state that can overcome the socio-ecological crisis through the recovery of workers’ autonomy and sovereignty.
